Popular with Native Americans, smudging is a ceremony of cleansing using the burning of herbs.  Used for spiritual cleansing and blessings, the burning of the sacred herbs is used to purify and to bless both people and places, including sacred sites, and clears any negative energies associated.

Many cultures also use smudging as a way to to cleanse and in the crystal community we utilise the same idea of the burning of the herbs to purify and cleanse using the power of the smoke.  The most popular way to smudge your crystals is to use Sage, Palo Santo or incense (our favourite is Nitraj incense).

Palo Santo is a sacred tree, grown in very select parts of South America.  The Spanish meaning of Palo Santo is ‘holy wood’.  The shamans for many centuries have used Palo Santo in ceremonies, ritual prayer and in healing.  It is said to enhance creativity, raises your vibration for meditation and encourages a deeper connection to The Universe.

How to smudge:

It’s super easy to use smudging as a way to cleanse your crystals.  Simply start by holding your crystals close to the stream of smoke and allow the crystal to be enveloped by the smoke.  The alternative way to cleans is to pass your preferred smudge stick over the crystals and around them.  Either way the air will be filled with the smoke and therefore, at the same time you’ll be inhaling the wonderous cleansing properties too!
