Salt has been used for centuries as a tool to eliminate negative energies and to banish negativity. For that reason salt cleansing is a wonderful way to reset your new crystals.  You can use the salt wet (by mixing a tablespoon with a cup of cold water) or dry.  Soaking or burying your crystals in wet or dry salt allows the negative energies to be sucked away.

It is important to remember to throw the salt away after using for cleansing.  Do not ingest or you will be taking in any negative energy that the salt has removed from your crystal.

One minute per stone is enough to cleanse, but you may wish to leave your crystal for longer.  Always do your research regarding which stones are happy in salt and especially salt water.  Soft, brittle and porous stones should avoid being cleansed by salt.

Sea Water

One of our favourite cleansing techniques is to use sea water.  You can either collect a bottle of sea water to use later or as we do cleanse your crystals actually in the sea.  That way you get the added benefit of the running water too, which in itself is a wonderful cleanser.

If you can’t get to the beach, you can mix a tablespoon of sea salt (rock salt and table salt also work) into a bowl of water.  Allow your crystal to be complete submerged and soak for a few hours or a few days and then pat dry when this is complete.

Once again, it’s always best to check if your crystal can withstand a sea salt cleanse.  Hard crystals are normally fine, but avoid any porous or soft stones and any stones which contain trace metals.

Alternatives

If of course you really do want to use Salt or Sea water to cleanse your crystals, you can always place your crystal in a glass bowl and place on top of your bowl of salt.  The energy will move through the glass and will cleanse your crystal.  Plus, remember there are other alternatives also which do not have to involve any touching of the crystal at all…
